Timing belt replacement

The timing belt or cam belt is a rubber belt that controls the timing of the engines valves. The timing belt connects the crankshaft to the camshaft which in turn controls the opening and closing of the valves. The timing belt can also run the water pump and other auxiliary shafts, tensioners and idlers.

The timing belt is usually replaced at a manufacturer's set mileage or time, as it is usually hidden behind a cover. The cost involved in inspecting it will be about half the cost of replacement and it is standard trade practice to always replace the belt if it is removed. Engine timing belt failure can cause major engine damage so it is recommended that it is replaced on or before the manufacturer's suggested time schedules.

Please note that not all cars have timing belts as some are driven by gears or chains. Some late model vehicles have returned to chain drive to allow for variable valve timing.
